The Problem

Font licences are not one-size-fits-all.

Most organisations use fonts across multiple environments — websites, apps, documents and publications. Each one carries different licence requirements. Many businesses unknowingly operate outside the terms of their agreements.

Desktop

Most commercial font licences begin with desktop usage, allowing fonts to be installed for creating documents, graphics and marketing materials. However, desktop licences rarely extend to web, app or software distribution.

Branding

A logo or visual identity may be used across websites, packaging, advertising and digital products. Ensuring your font licence covers long-term commercial brand usage is essential before launching your identity.

Enterprise

Large organisations often require enterprise licensing to cover multiple departments, locations, subsidiaries or global users. These agreements simplify compliance while supporting large-scale commercial use.

Software Embedding

Embedding fonts within desktop software, mobile apps, SaaS platforms or hardware products usually requires a dedicated software or OEM licence. Standard desktop licences rarely include distribution rights for embedded fonts.

Why Font License Exists

Licensing should inform, not intimidate.

Commercial font licensing is genuinely complex. Agreements vary significantly between foundries, licence types are poorly standardised across the industry, and the consequences of non-compliance can be significant.

Font License exists to cut through that complexity. As an independent consultancy, there is no commercial interest in any particular foundry or typeface. The goal is simply to help organisations understand their obligations, make informed decisions and stay compliant.

01

Independent advice

No foundry relationships. No commercial bias. Guidance based solely on what is right for your organisation.

02

Plain-language clarity

Licence agreements translated into clear, actionable guidance — without legal jargon or unnecessary complexity.

03

Practical outcomes

Every engagement ends with a clear picture of your obligations and a practical path to compliance.
